The Story of Watu Ulo Jember

Once upon a time, it was believed that the south coast region was lived by Nogo Rojo in the form of a giant snake. Nogo Rojo who controls this coastal area eats all the animals in it so that people could not get food from that place. Then, there were two young men named Raden Said and Raden Mursodo who were brothers. The two young men were the adopted children of Nini and Aki Sambi, a couple who were quite old. Raden Said in this story is believed to be the same as Raden Said who later became known as Sunan Kalijaga.

One day, there were two young men who were fishing where Nogo Rojo lived. Because all the animals there have been eaten by the giant snake. So the two young men did not manage to catch a single fish. Until finally, the Raden Mursodo hook managed to hook a fish called the mina fish. Mina fish could actually talk. He asked to be free and not killed as their food. Instead, the mina fish will turn into a gold fish for Raden Mursodo. Raden Mursodo agreed and released the Mina fish back into the sea.

A long after, immediately Nogo Rojo appeared and ate the mina fish that had been released by Raden Mursodo. Felt hurt, Raden Mursodo immediately fought the giant snake and cut off his body into three parts. Because of the biggest body, three parts of the giant snake scattered. Its body was on the beach at Watu Ulo Jember, its head was in Grajakan Banyuwangi, and its tail was in Pacitan. The pieces of the body of the Nogo Rojo are then believed to have settled on the beach at Watu Ulo and transformed into rocks coming into the sea.
