The Role of Poetry in Education Based on “Dangerous
Minds” Movie
An ex-marine Mrs.
Louanne Johnson who appplies as an english literature. The first day of
teaching, Mrs. John's excited because it was promised to get special students
who were smart. But the reality is different when she entered the class. It
turned out that what she was facing was children who were difficult to control.
Children who come from diverse races, still keep singing, talking and busy with
their respective affairs. When trying to get attention, still she was ignored.
Mrs. John's gave an A score
to all of her students, provided that they had to defend until the end of the
year to graduate from high school. This attention and enthusiasm is then used
to teach types of words, conjugations of words, meaning of words and meaning of
sentences.
Mrs. John continues her
efforts to teach about words and their use by giving chocolate and snacks for
those who can answer or explain correctly. Motivations that are increasingly
formed are then strengthened by the challenge of understanding poetry .
Mrs. John gave Bob
Dylan's poems containing street life with drug traffickers and violence, as
well as the ability to choose life. Mrs. John's wanted to teach them about the
meaning of life by touching their lives directly.
Another problem when
Durrel and Lionel, two twin brothers, left school because his mother thought
Mrs. John had poisoned them with poetry and dreams about a future that was not
relevant to their lives.
The incident made Mrs.
John's shock and decided to stop
teaching at the end of the first semester. However, his students made Mrs.
Johns aware of his teachings about choosing a way of life and not to give in to
failure as she taught during this semester.
